A septic system does a lot of work quietly underground, which can make it easy to forget about until something goes wrong. Septic system maintenance is largely about preventing that situation by managing what enters the system and keeping up with routine service.

Pumping is one of the most important septic system maintenance tasks. At Walters Environmental Services, we generally recommend septic tank pumping every two to five years, although the right schedule depends on factors such as tank size and the number of people in the home. Township ordinances can also affect pumping requirements.

What you do between pumpings matters, too:

  • Watch What You Flush. Hazardous materials, feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, and hard objects belong in the trash rather than the toilet. Even products marketed as flushable can create problems for septic plumbing.
  • Keep Grease Out of the Drain. Cooking fats, oils, and grease can contribute to buildup and shouldn’t be treated like ordinary wastewater.
  • Pay Attention to Water Use. Large amounts of wastewater entering the tank at once can put unnecessary stress on the system. Fix leaking fixtures and spread out high-water-use activities when practical.
  • Protect the Absorption Area. Don’t drive or park heavy vehicles over your drain field. Soil compaction and physical damage can interfere with its ability to handle effluent.
  • Don’t Skip Routine Service. Pumping removes accumulated solids before they reach levels that can interfere with the tank or travel farther into the system.

Good septic system maintenance doesn’t require you to become a septic expert. It does require consistency. A few sensible habits, paired with professional pumping and inspections as needed, can help you avoid backups, protect the absorption area, and extend the system’s useful life.
